Breast Augmentation: Virginia Bethesda
Breast augmentation can enhance body shape, balance breast irregularities and can also be used following breast cancer surgery for breast reconstruction. The results can successfully alter the appearance of a woman’s body, helping her to feel more confident and feminine. Incisions can be placed in the crease where the breast meets the chest or around the lower part of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).
At this time both saline and silicone implants are used for breast augmentation patients. The FDA has stated that silicone implants are safe and do not cause cancer. They can be used in breast enhancement procedures and are more “natural” in appearance. The decision of which implant to use can be addressed during your cosmetic consultation. Some breast implants are placed above the pectoralis muscle and others below depending on the amount of breast tissue you have.
This surgery is performed at an outpatient surgical center and is done under general anesthesia by a Board Certified anesthesiologist. The procedure takes 1.5 hours and is performed through an areolar incision about 1 inch in length. Post operative discomfort is controlled with medications. Patients can return to work within 3-5 days.
